Worship Guild & Rota
There’s room for YOU on our guild of lay ministers at worship!
Worship is the “essence” of our common life at St. James’. For that reason, our vitality depends on our worship ministries. Acolytes, lay assistants, thurifers, crucifers, torch bearers, greeters, ushers, lectors, and intercessors ensure that our worship is offered to God with beauty, grace and devotion.
Age is not a barrier to service in our Worship Guild. If you would like to try your hand (or your voice!) at a particular role, speak to Father Chris. Individual training is straightforward and can be arranged at any time. A parish-wide training day will take place in the early fall.
Lector: reads from the Old or New Testament at worship
Intercessor: leads the Prayer of the People
Assistant: stands at the priest’s left (congregation right) to help the priest at the altar and give direction to other lay ministers
Acolyte: performs a number of duties – lights & extinguishes the altar candles, carries the processional cross, receives the offerings and rings the bells at Mass
Torchbearer: carries a tall candlestick (“torch”) during the processions
Thurifer: carries and tends the thurible (swinging incense pot); censes the altar party and the people
Here is our worship rota for September through November 2011:
