Outings

At least once a month, members of St. James’ enjoy a group outing to a concert, show or exhibition in New York City or sometimes closer to home. Take a look at what’s coming up and join us!

Sunday, May 20 at 2 PM

Malverne Cinema
350 Hempstead Avenue
Malverne, NY 11565

Join us for a parish outing to see the new documentary about the life of Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous and father of the 12 Step Movement.

In 1999, Bill Wilson was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Heroes and Icons of the 20th Century for his role as co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill W. traces the story of a reluctant hero, who lived a life of sacrifice and service, and left a legacy of recovery that continues every day, all around the world.

We leave from St. James promptly at 1 PM. Or you can meet the group at the Malverne Cinema at 1:30 PM.

Saturday, November 13 at 4 pm.

The Screwtape Letters is a smart, provocative and wickedly funny theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel about spiritual warfare from a demon’s point of view – now playing at the Westside Theatre, 407 W. 43rd St,  New York City.

The St. James’ crew will leave from Long Beach early enough to get to the Westside Theatre by 3:30 pm for the 4 pm show. Afterwards, we’ll meander down to Ollie’s Chinese Restaurant for scallion pancakes and other delicious dinner options.

Please email your reservation to us here. Tickets are $50.

You can see photos from this outing here.

Thursday, October 21, 8 pm

The Mariinksy Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Russia performs this remarkable symphony, one of the largest choral works in the classical concert repertory. Part 1 is based on the 9th-century Christian hymn Veni creator spiritus, while Part 2 is a setting of words from Goethe’s Faust. The two parts are unified by a common theme: redemption through the power of love.

We will enjoy a delicious and inexpensive ($15-$25) Italian meal at Angelo’s before the concert.

Please email your reservation to us here. Tickets are $55.

Deadline for reservations is September 19.

On Saturday, August 7, a group of nine St. James’ parishioners enjoyed an afternoon exploring Egyptian antiquities that were part of the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibition at Times Square. At the beginning of the day, Father Chris offered a pre-outing talk on “Ancient Conceptions of the Afterlife” to help unpack some of the spiritual significance of the exhibition. The exhibition presented an array of possessions unearthed from Tutankhamen’s tomb, along with antiquities representing his family and contemporaries. It was especially interesting to learn about the Tutankhamen’s role in restoring the traditional religion of Egypt after the reign of his father Ankhenaten, who enforced a novel form of solar monotheism throughout the United Kingdom.

St. James’ offers cultural outings at least once a month. Please look on the front page of the website or in the parish newsletter CrossTalk for upcoming events.
